Hard water contains dissolved calcium, magnesium and, in many cases, iron. Most homes have hard water, whether it is supplied by a private well or a municipality. In many cases, homeowners don't realize they have hard water or the constant and expensive harm it causes.
Many mistake the telltale signs of hard water and blame the problems on inadequate cleaners and detergents and poor performing appliances. Or they resign themselves to the fact that these problems are simply a way of life. Dry skin and hair, bathtub ring, spots on glass and silverware, dull, dingy clothing, disappointing performance and a shortened life expectancy of water-using appliances are all problems frequently caused by hard water. Most don't realize how much time, money and energy is spent fighting the hard water battle.
Take the first step and find out how hard your water is and if there are any other issues. Your local Kinetico water professional will be glad to arrange for a free, in-home water analysis.
Selecting the right water treatment system can be confusing. The information on this page should help you understand some of the treatment technologies available, but we invite you to talk with one of our local water professionals to help you understand your water and your options.

A Kinetico Water Softener will provide your family with abundant clean, soft water on demand. From multitank systems powered by the energy of moving water to a more traditional approach, Kinetico covers all your options. Your local Kinetico water professional will work with you to choose the water softener that's right for you.
Hard water is softened by removing the calcium and magnesium it contains. When hard water passes through the softening system's resin bed, it exchanges the hard ions in the water for soft ones, so only softened water passes through to your home.
Once the resin bed fills up with hardness ions, it must be cleaned. Salt is typically used in the regeneration (cleaning) process and restores the resin to a “clean” state so the ion exchange process can begin again.
Kinetico has taken its best water softener and made it even better. With improvements that make them more efficient and effective, Kinetico Premier Series softeners are ideal for homes with the most challenging water conditions. These high-flow systems are comprised of multiple tanks, so you'll have a continuous supply of soft, clean water. Premier Series systems only operate when needed, without the use of electricity, so you won't have any computers or timers to program, set, repair or replace.

Water quality can no longer be taken for granted. Aging municipal water utilities struggle and often fail to meet federal quality standards. Our distribution infrastructure also faces the challenges of age and budget cuts. Once thought pristine, well water is also a source of concern since much groundwater has been contaminated by a variety of chemical and biological contaminants. It’s no wonder many of us now think twice before taking a sip from the tap. Bottled water was once a popular alternative, but it’s expensive and creates waste that’s hard on the environment. Fortunately, with Kinetico, you can provide your family with fresh, clean, great-tasting water without worry or concern.
Our most comprehensive drinking water system uses multiple stages of filtration, including reverse osmosis technology, to remove just about everything from your water that isn’t water. The K5 is the most advanced reverse osmosis system available, with unparalleled features and benefits. Macrolite® Filter—This twin tank system uses an exclusive ceramic media developed in conjunction with 3M and brought to you only by Kinetico. It eliminates certain forms of iron, sediment, particulate matter and turbidity, down to negligible levels.
Carbon Filter—Twin tanks contain a carbon filter that is commonly used to refresh water by removing chlorine, tastes and odors.
Calcite System—This treatment gets rid of problems associated with acidic water (blue-green stains on copper fixtures or pipes or in tubs and sinks) by raising the pH of water to a neutral level of 7.
Sulfur Guard™ Water Filter—These filters provide a turnkey remedy for handling foul smelling "rotten egg" water once and for all. Unlike other systems that use multiple treatment stages and are expensive, cumbersome and complex to maintain, with a Kinetico Sulfur Guard® Water Filter, there's not much to do but enjoy your water.
Arsenic Guard® Water Filter—If you're faced with arsenic in your water, you want a hassle-free solution you can rely on to remove this deadly poison. So leave everything to Kinetico. The tanks that filter the arsenic from your water will be periodically replaced when necessary by your Kinetico water professional, so you don't have to do a thing.
Chlorine Removal Filter—This single-tank unit is a simple solution to whole home chlorine removal and a great addition to any Kinetico water softener. It not only provides chlorine-free water to every faucet in your home, it also protects your water softener from the harsh effects of chlorine.
Chloramine Reduction System—The use of chloramine to disinfect water is increasing in popularity. An increasing number of water treatment plants have begun to use chloramine, instead of chlorine, to disinfect water. Like chlorine, chloramine has an unpleasant taste and odor and can also make water more corrosive.
If you currently have a dechlorination system, it might not be up to the job of removing chloramine from water efficiently. Kinetico's Chloramine Reduction System, frequently installed in conjunction with a Kinetico water softener, is a single-tank solution to filter chloramine from your home's water supply. The system uses our exclusive Sulfaban media and delivers chloramine-free water to every faucet in your home. It works effectively to maximize chloramine reduction with minimal maintenance. Check with your local water utility to find out if chloramine is being used to treat your water supply.
Aeration System—This system is used to oxidize dissolved iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide in water. Aeration transforms these culprits into a form that can be easily filtered out with a whole home water filter.
Neutralization System—A simple, single-tank option for raising the pH of water and eliminating the problem of acidic water.
